STORAGE ABILITY OF SATSUMA MANDARIN AS AFFECTED BY PREHARVEST TREATMENTS

Abstract:
Preharvest treatments affect the storage ability of fruit. In practice systemic fungicides are sprayed, 2-3 weeks before harvest. During this period, treatments that can increase resistance of fruit peel may be effective in controlling postharvest losses and extending storage life. 2,4-D, GA3 and Ca may be used for this purpose. Ca in different forms has been used before and after harvest in apple fruit to increase peel and tissue resistance (Lurie et al., 1992). Other studies have shown that Ca not only affects membranes at the cellular level, but also influences a wide range of activities (Marme, 1989). Although much research has been done on other fruits to decrease postharvest diseases by pre and postharvest application of calcium, only very limited work has been done on citrus. Preharvest or postharvest application of gibberellins delays the maturation and senescence of citrus fruits and extends their storage life (El-Otmani et al., 1991). The present study aimed to examine the effects of preharvest application of CaCl2, GA3, 2,4-D and Benomyl for increasing peel resistance, delaying senescence and minimizing losses during storage, thus extending the storage period of satsuma mandarin.
