NITROGEN NUTRITION AFFECTS FRUIT FIRMNESS, QUALITY AND SHELF LIFE OF STRAWBERRY

Authors:   L. Mukkun, Z. Singh, D. Phillips
Keywords:   Fragaria ananassa Duch., postharvest quality, shelf life, respiration, ethylene
Abstract:
Short shelf life and poor quality of strawberries (Fragaria ananassa Duch.) limit their export to distant markets after harvest (Lamarre et al., 1993). Nitrogen fertilization has been reported to affect quality of various fruits and vegetables (Locascio et al., 1984). These observations prompted us to investigate the effects of different rates of nitrogen fertilization during the growing season on fruit quality and shelf life of strawberries.
