RESPONSES OF ‘GALA’ APPLES TO PREHARVEST TREATMENT WITH AVG AND LOW-ETHYLENE CA STORAGE

Keywords:   Malus domestica Borkh., NAAm, ripening
Abstract:
'Gala' apples suffer heavy preharvest fruit drop, regulated by ethylene and auxins (Pratt, 1974), and fast postharvest ripening, driven by high respiration and ethylene production (Brackmann et al., 1994). In the apple industry, NAA and NAAm (naphthaleneacetamide) are usually used to control fruit drop, but these compounds increase the respiratory rate. Preharvest treatment with AVG (aminoethoxyvinyglycine) can reduce preharvest fruit drop, delay ripening (Bangerth, 1978) and reduce loss of quality. As AVG can be absorbed by fruits and leaves (Bangerth, 1978), its distribution on the tree surface is important and can be influenced by surfactants. Furthermore, some fruits produce larger amounts of ethylene, which hastens ripening during storage, so that ethylene removal could delay ripening of 'Gala' apples (Brackmann et al., 1999). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of preharvest treatment with AVG, in combination with various surfactants and low-ethylene CA storage, on the fruit quality during CA storage of ‘Gala’ apples.
