INFLUENCE OF PREHARVEST NUTRITIONAL TREATMENTS ON POSTHARVEST DISORDERS OF 'FUERTE' AVOCADO FRUITS

Abstract:

A physiological disorder that develops on the fruit peel of avocado cv. Fuerte, shows up initially several hours after picking as small light-brown spots that usually expand and become darker during cold storage and shelf life. Larger fruits have been found to be the most sensitive. The injury appears to be more profound in response to mechanical bruising (Zilkah et al., 1998). There is no clear evidence of the direct physiological cause to the damage variation among fruits and between orchards.

It has been hypothesized that some nutritional factors may play a role in fruit susceptibility to development of the brown spots. This hypothesis has been positively supported by field experiments, which indicated that preharvest sprays with nutritional solutions reduced brown spot occurrence.

The objective of the present work was to examine the effect of monopotassium phosphate (K + P) and the nutritional solution 'Alvaton' (N, P, K + microelements) on the occurrence of brown spots in a trial conducted in 9-10 orchards.
