MODELLING GAS EXCHANGE RATES OF CONFERENCE PEARS DURING CA STORAGE WITH HIGH AND LOW CO2

Abstract:
Susceptibility to Brown Heart in Conference pears is influenced by growing location and year and increases with fruit maturity. The disorder can appear after some weeks in controlled atmosphere (CA) storage, especially with high CO2, and is alleviated by delayed CA. The hypothesis has been made that Brown Heart could be due to a lower energy production by aerobic respiration or by fermentation than maintenance energy needs (Peppelenbos et al., 1998). In order to estimate energy production, gas exchange rates must be known. This study aimed at determining and modelling gas exchange rates of Conference pears in storage.
