THE GROWERS’ VIEW ON NOVELTY PROTECTION

Author:   P. Dieleman
Keywords:   breeders’ rights, AIPH, COPA–COGECA, ornamental plants, database of protected varieties
Abstract:
Some examples out of the market illustrate the growing importance of plant variety protection in the marketing of ornamental plants. The ornamental plant sector covers more than 50% of the number of all protected varieties in Europe. Protecting a variety opens new possibilities for marketing, especially in the nursery stock sector. For cut flowers it has an effect on the over-importation into the EC.
The grower must have the possibility of being well informed about the protection status of a given variety. An electronic database could be a good solution.
The paper also focuses on the attitude of international growers’ organisations towards plant variety protection.
