Abstract:
Phytoplasmas belonging to the European Stone Fruit Yellows (ESFY) subgroup have been detected by fluorescence microscopy and PCR in Prunus trees at a site in S.E. England.
The pathogens were detected in autumn and also in spring.
The symptoms in infected trees varied from severe decline to absence.
This is the first record of phytoplasmas in Prunus species in the UK. There was no cross reaction in western blots between antibodies raised to ESFY and to the closely related apple proliferation and pear decline phytoplasmas.
