EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDIES ON PEAR DECLINE (PD) IN ITALY

Authors:   C. Poggi Pollini, R. Bassini, S. Guerrini, L. Giunchedi, G. Firrao
Abstract:
A two year study (1997-1998) carried out in Emilia-Romagna pear orchards has provided a better understanding of pear decline (PD) epidemiology in Italy. It reveals the importance of overwintering adult psyllids for the survival of PD phytoplasma during winter months and the transmission of the disease to the pear trees the following spring. On the basis of this knowledge, new control strategies are suggested for Italian orchards.
