Abstract:
There are currently a number of methods which can be used to detect viral or virus-like pathogens of temperate fruit crops. The four major classes of detection assays are the biological indexing assays, the serological assays, the molecular hybridization assays and, finally the amplification assays such as the ones derived from the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. All these methods have their advantages as well as their shortcomings. The goal of the present paper is to rapidly review these characteristics and present and discuss areas for future improvements of these techniques and for progress in the field of pathogen detection.
