NITRATE UPTAKE OF LACTUCA SATIVA L. DEPENDING ON VARIETIES AND NUTRIENT SOLUTION IN HYDROPONIC SYSTEM PPH

Authors:   F.G. Schröder, H. Bero
Keywords:   EU recommendations, nitrate content, lettuce, hydroponic system
Abstract:
Encouraged by the recent EU recommendations to lower nitrate content of vegetables the paper presents research aimed reducing nitrate level in lettuce. The studies were carried out to ascertain the contents and uptake of nitrate in the regime of different varieties and nitrate level in the nutrient solution in a closed hydroponic system. Exhibited significant differences regarding the uptake of nitrogen among the varieties.
Only high N-level in solution (336 ppm) furnished the high content of nitrate as high as 4000 ppm (variety specific).
Low nitrate content of 3500 ppm was recorded during spring and summer (season specific).
Variety Omega responded positively to high level of nitrate in the first two weeks after transplantation and drop down continuously in subsequent weeks. (time specific). Solar radiation (PAR) affected profoundly in terms of growth and development (environmentally specific).
