THE EFFECT OF LIGHT AND NUTRITION ON GROWTH AND FLOWERING OF ORIENTAL LILIES

Author:   J. Treder
Keywords:   nutrient accumulation, fertilization, supplemental light, lily forcing, 'Star Gazer'
Abstract:
Oriental lilies are susceptible to insufficient light level during winter forcing. Low irradiance could result in worse quality of stems and leaves, flowers abortion and lower dry matter production. The effects of additional lighting and fertilization on growth, flowering, dry matter production and nutrient absorption were evaluated. The experiment was conducted on oriental lily 'Star Gazer' forced during wintertime. Plants were grown at two light levels: natural light and natural light with additional lighting and three levels of fertigation: control - without fertilizers and Peters (15: 11: 29) at two levels: 0.8 and 1.6 g dm-3.
The obtained data show that additional lighting significantly increased flower quality, increased leaf area and production of dry matter, accelerated flowering and reduced bud dropping. Both, fertilization and additional lighting increased accumulation of mineral compounds in lily organs. The highest accumulation of potassium, magnesium and phosphorus was observed when plants were fertigated with the highest concentration of nutrient solution. The accumulation of calcium in leaves was not affected by nutrition but strongly depended on light level. Plants grown with artificial light have almost twice higher level of calcium in the leaves. The accumulation of mineral compounds in stems was neither significantly influenced by nutrition nor by light level.
