Abstract:
Growing media have high diversity in bulk density and water holding capacity.
To characterize the element contents in these growing media for use in horticulture, it is best to use an extraction method in which all different growing media with one set of interpretation guidelines can be used.
In the described method the water holding capacity (Wd) is determined.
The extractant, i.e. water is added to another part of the sample in a volume that the water content is equal to three times the water content Wd. After shaking, element contents are determined in the extract.
The method is called ‘3*substrate moisture’. For peaty growing media the element concentrations in the extract of present methods equals the element contents in the 1:1.5 volume method.
