GENETIC AND MOLECULAR ANALYSIS OF IMPORTANT CHARACTERS IN ROSES

Authors:   T. Debener, B. Von Malek, L. Mattiesch, H. Kaufmann
Keywords:   Rosa multiflora, double flowers, prickles, molecular markers, genetic mapping.
Abstract:
Five different morphological and physiological characters could be analysed in controlled crosses on the diploid and tetraploid level respectively. The presence of double flowers, prickles and a resistance gene to blackspot were found to be inherited as monogenic dominant characters. Pink flower colour segregates as a codominant character whereas recurrent flowering is inherited monogenic recessively. In contrast, the number of petals in double flowers is inherited as a quantitative trait in two crosses. Closely linked RAPD and AFLP markers were found for the genes for double flowers, pink flower colour, blackspot resistance and petal number. Furthermore the molecular resources to isolate rose genes via positional cloning have been created.
