Abstract:
Commercial plantations of proteas in Tenerife date from the early 1980s. The area under protea cultivation is increasing, being about 20 ha at present. An extensive study of the many diseases that affect proteas in their natural habitat and can influence their develop-ment is therefore required. Climatic conditions in the Canary Islands are optimum for the development of such diseases and, together with the geographical location of the archi-pelago, favour the appearance of other diseases not described in the literature. We report a preliminary study of fungi found in the aerial parts of proteas of the genera Leucospermum and Leucadendron growing in Tenerife. Twenty-one species of fungi belonging to 16 different genera were isolated and identified. Some of them are reported for the first time on proteas in the Canary Islands. Control tests with 15 different fungicides were car-ried out in the laboratory.
