Abstract:
Proteaceae hybrids obtained from the Agricultural Research Council (A.R.C.) Fynbos Unit, South Africa, are being evaluated at three climatically different sites across Zimbabwe. The hybrids have proven to be site specific, even within Zimbabwe, with regard to survival and rate of growth. The field trials carried out can be used to select species that will grow successfully in a commercial setting in this climate, widening the assortment of varieties to the market. Research projects are involved in the identification of pests and diseases that afflict Proteaceae cultivars and working out successful management control methods. Other research activities involve developing propagation strategies for Leucospermum hybrids, the effect of pruning time and subsequent flower harvest of Protea sp. and post-harvest handling of Protea cultivars.
