Abstract:
Eleven proteas were introduced for potential production in the northern highland of Thailand. These were Protea cynaroides, P. neriifolia 'Alba' and 'Ruby', P. 'Pink Ice', Leucadendron: Leucadendron 'Fire Glow,' 'Inca Gold,' 'Julie,' and ' Safari Sunset' and Leucospermum 'Caroline,' Scarlet Ribbon,' and 'Tango.' Two-year results indicated that all proteas, P. cynaroides, P. neriifolia 'Alba' and 'Ruby' and P. 'Pink Ice', and Leucandendron 'Inca Gold' and Safari Sunset' could perform well in the area. For each species and cultivar, the flower yields were recorded and for some protea and leucospermum, the number of days for flower development was determined. Some new species and cultivars, were introduced in early 1999: Banksia ericifolia, 'Giant Candle' and 'Collina' var. 'Collina Yellow', Leucadendron 'Floridum' ♀, Leucospermum tottum 'Fantasy,' P. laurifolia and P. scolymocephala. Several treatments were tested in order to increase number of plants using cuttings. Treatment of cuttings with 1000 ppm of IBA + 1000 ppm of NAA was the most suitable method for propagating leucadendrons whereas for P. 'Pink Ice', a commercial rooting hormone was the best treatment.
