Abstract:
The reproductive system of dioecious genus Leucadendron seems to be quite distinct from other commercial genera of the family Proteaceae. Controlled crosses executed between different commercial species of Leucadendron indicated that closely related species hybridize more easily than more distantly related species. When pollen was sown on an artificial pollen germination medium recommended for Protea no pollen tubes were observed. In scanning electron microscopy observations the stigmatic surface appeared to be pappilated.
