Abstract:
PREFACE
In order to stimulate the protea industry in the Canary Islands, the 5th International Protea Working Group Symposium was held in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain, concurrently with the 10th International Protea Association Conference. The gathering of growers and scientists was an excellent opportunity for the exchange of ideas and it set the stage for future joint meetings.
The success of the Conference and Symposium and, it is be hoped, the present publication is the result of the joint efforts of many people and institutions. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I wish to thank the Ministry of Agriculture, Cattle, Fisheries and Food of the Canarian Government for sponsoring the publishing costs of this Acta Horticulturae; the ISHS, the SECH, La Laguna University, the Council of Tenerife Island, other institutions and firms who provided the necessary financial and logistical support; and Prof. Richard A. Criley of the Department of Tropical Plant and Soil Science of the University of Hawaii for editing these proceedings.
In closing, I would like to express my gratitude to all members of the Scientific Committee for their generous contributions in terms of both time and effort.

EDITOR'S NOTE
The first symposium of the International Protea Working Group of the Ornamentals Section of ISHS was held in 1985 in Cape Town, South Africa. Its proceedings were produced as Acta Horticulturae volume 185 (1986). In the time between the first symposium and this one, four additional Acta Horticulturae volumes on protea have been published with the aid and active support of the International Protea Association. The volumes dedicated to research in the Proteaceae are hereby noted as:

This Fifth International Protea Research Symposium featured the research of scientists from eleven nations, reflecting the growing interest in protea production around the world. I would like to thank the participants for their prompt production of their manuscripts and the revisions requested by the Scientific Committee who served as reviewers. This is both an edited and refereed proceedings. In addition to the symposium topics, there were several workshops featuring contributions from members of the International Protea Association. Some contributions to these workshops are also found in these proceedings.
