ISHS Acta Horticulturae 544: IV International Walnut Symposium

INHERITANCE OF BLOOMING TIME OF WALNUT, WITH REGARD TO THE PROPERTY OF REPRODUCTIONAL AUTOREGULATION OF SPECIES

Authors:   P. Szentiványi, E. Szücs
Keywords:   dichogamy, pollination, abortion of female flower, compatibility of varieties
Abstract:
A large number of crosses has been made at the Research Institute with Hungarian and foreign walnut varieties as partners to gain valuable novel market varieties. This species shows a particular trait, namely the autoregulation of fruit set, which affects considerably the productivity of commercial orchards and which is linked with an excess of pollen during the flowering. Thus the inheritance of the blooming time of the male and female flowers has been investigated for several years in the progenies. It has been stated that :
  • the feature of the partners does not turn up predictably in the progeny,
  • it is most important to take into consideration the blooming time class of both kinds of flowers when choosing the varieties to plant together,
  • in years of irregular spring weather the stability of the blooming time of the variety or in other words the deviation of the actual blooming time of this variety from its characteristic blooming class is also very important.
