ISHS Acta Horticulturae 544: IV International Walnut Symposium

RESULTS IN WALNUT PROPAGATION BY USING DIFFERENT METHODS

Authors:   GH. Achim, I. Botu
Keywords:   walnut, Juglans regia L., grafting, hotcallusing, chipbudding
Abstract:
In the past, seeds coming from valuable selections were used for the walnut propagation in Romania. This type of propagation produced a large number of natural hybrids with various characteristics into the walnut orchards. During the last years, the propagation by grafting of the walnut cultivars with good behaviour started to be more and more important. Some studies were carried out in order to find the best ways to propagate walnut cultivars. The best results in walnut grafting at the Statiunea de Cercetare Dezvoltare Pomicola (SCDP) Vālcea after trying various methods were recorded when using ‘whip and tongue’ grafting, followed by callusing at the grafting point, with the help of a special installation with warm water, which provides 26 +/- 1° C at that point (hot callusing). The grafting success rate is higher then 85 %. Other method used is ‘chip budding’ in the field, during May 15th to June 15th period. The rate of success in this case is more then 8o %. Utilising these methods, more then 10.000 grafted walnut trees were produced each year.
