Abstract:
Experiments were conducted during two years to assess the effects of several schedules of copper spraying to control walnut blight in cv.
Lara.
The evolution of incidence and se-verity of external necroses on fruits was not significantly different among treatments.
At harvest, necroses could be observed on more than 90 % of the nuts.
The same is true with respect to the progression of severity during the season.
No treatment produced a signifi-cant increase in the proportion of sound kernels.
Nut shape and volume at harvest differed significantly with treatments, suggesting a long lasting interference of copper in the physiology of the developing fruits.
However, the effect of each treatment was not similar in both years of observation.
It is concluded that, in spite of its failure to control walnut blight, copper does interfere with some physiological processes during fruit development, whose mechanisms are not yet explained, and must therefore be investigated.
