A STUDY ON THE EFFECTS OF GIBERRELLIC ACID APPLICATION ON SHOOT GROWTH AND MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF JUGLANS REGIA L. SEEDLINGS

Authors:   Y. Akça, M. Sirma, S. Keskin
Keywords:   giberrellic acid, Juglans regia L. seedlings
Abstract:
This study was conducted out to determine the effects of Gibberellic acid application on the growth and morphological characteristics of Juglans regia L. seedlings. The seedlings were sprayed with GA3 50, 100 ,150, 200 ppm from the 15 May to 15 August. These treatments were replicated four times within a randomised block design. Gibberellins caused some undesirable side effects such as formation of narrow leaves, chlorosis and long internodes. These negative effects took away all advantages of the fast growth mediated by gibberellins. Chlorosis was more noticeable than leaf deformation in high dose applications. As the effect of gibberellin application weakens, growth rate has been decreased to a level similar to the one in control plants. There were significant differences in seedling characteristics between treated seedlings and control plants. The shoot growth increased as parallel to high GA3 application. But the chlorophyll content and leaf area decreased. The plant high was determined as 29.4 cm, 37.3 cm, 52.3 cm,53.1 cm and 64.8 cm, chlorophyll content was determined as 1.029, 0.930, 0.712, 0.335 and 0.264 mg/g in control plant, 50, 100, 150 and 200 ppm GA3 treated plants, respectively.
