Abstract:
PREFACE
Walnut research scientists, extension specialists and industry representatives met for the 4th International Walnut Symposium at Bordeaux (France) from the 12th to 16th of October 1999. The Fruit and Vine Research Station (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique - INRA) organised this meeting under the auspices of the ISHS "Fruit Section". This meeting followed up the first International Symposium on Walnut Production held in Budapest, Hungary, on September 1989 (convened by Peter Szentivanyi), the Second International Walnut Meeting in Tarragona, Spain, on October 1991 (convened by Neus Aleta) and the Third International Walnut Congress in Alcobaça, Portugal, on June 1995 (convened by José Antonio Gomes Pereira).
117 scientists representing 23 countries from 5 continents attended to this 4th International Walnut Symposium. France, Italy, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the USA were represented by the largest delegations. The organisers were particulary pleased to note the attendance of scientists from the more distant countries of the southern hemisphere: Australia, Chile, New-Zealand and South Africa.
The scientific programme featured seven sessions, those covered a wide range of topics from genetic resources to breeding, varieties, propagation and rootstocks, molecular biology, biotechnology, biology, physiology, plant protection, orchard management, nut quality and economics. A one-day long technical trip was organised in the Garonne Valley to visit the INRA Experimental farm of "Les Jarres" near Bordeaux, a walnut and hazelnut cooperative and a commercial orchard where fresh nuts were harvested mechanically. During the closing session, Dr Neus Aleta of IRTA (Spain) was elected as the new chair of the ISHS walnut Working Group, in replacement of Dr E. Germain of INRA (France). Three countries put themselves forward as candidates for the next ISHS Walnut Symposium: Australia, Chile and Italy. Italy was widely supported and will be recommended to the ISHS Executive Committee.
A two day post congress trip allowed more than thirty of the Symposium participants to visit the Dordogne Valley, which is one of the major French walnut growing area as well as being famous for its touristic sites.
This book contains most of the communications presented at this Fourth International Walnut symposium: 40 full papers of the oral presentations and 43 short papers of the posters. These papers show the current state of walnut research from all over the world.
We wish to express our sincere gratitude to each one of the symposium participants and contributors for their enthusiastic cooperation. We are especially grateful to ISHS for its help in organizing the symposium and we would like to acknowledge the national, international and private organisations for supporting this meeting.
