Abstract:
In the period from August until December, vase life of some rose varieties often declines, due to leaf problems like leaf burning and leaf drying. To describe this problems, each two weeks, flowers of two rose varieties (‘Orange Unique’ and ‘Diva’) were obtained from the same local grower, during this period
During the testing period, vase life of both varieties decreased to 50% of the initial vase life, due to early leaf- and flower wilting and leaf drying. Leaf drying occurred earlier at 35% RH than at 60% RH. The number of stems with leaf drying or -burning increased from none in August to almost all stems at the end of December, at both air humidities. Transpiration doubled during the testing period. Stomatal resistance during day-time decreased, and from the end of October stomates did not close at night-time. Water loss of detached leaves within a period of two hours, showed a sharp increase from the end of October. Measuring the water loss of detached leaves may be a quick method to predict leaf problems of roses during vase life.
