Abstract:
Effect of aluminum sulfate [A12(SO4)3] at 50, 100 and 150 mg/1 and cobalt chloride (CoC12) at 100, 200 and 300 mg/1 in the holding solution containing 225 mg/1 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (HQS) and 4% glucose on vase life of Dendrobium 'Sonia Bom Joe' in comparison with the conventional holding solution containing 225 mg/HQS, 30 mg/1 AgNO3 and 4% glucose was studied at ambient conditions (30.2°C and 62% RH). All concentrations of A12(SO4)3 and 200 mg/1 CoC12 in the holding solutions increased vase life and bud opening of orchid flowers as effectively as the standard holding solution. Based on the cost and safety to the environment,A12(SO4)3 at 50 mg/1 was an optimum concentration to substitute for AgNO3 in the conventional solution and A12(SO4)3 could not be used to substitute for HQS in the holding solution. The holding solution containing 225 mg/1 HQS, 50 mg/1 A12(SO4)3 and 4% glucose also increased significantly vase life and bud opening of Dendrobium 'Sonia Red Joe' and Dendrobium 'Walter Oumae Taba 4N' flowers.
