Abstract:
Improving flavour and compositional quality of tomato raw materials is a prerequisite for better quality of processed tomato. The application of advanced backcross QTL (AB-QTL) analysis to cultivated tomato (Tanksley and Nelson, 1996) using the wild species of Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium, L. hirsutum, L. peruvianum, and L. parviflorum presented here demonstrates that it is possible to specify QTL for tomato flavour, sugars and organic acids, and technological parameters (°Brix, pH), all of which are known to be implied in the quality of processed tomato. RFLP markers were determined for BC2 plants, and traits for flavour, sugars and organic acids, and technological factors were measured from approximately 200 derived BC3 lines that were produced in replicated field trials in Spain. A total of 251 QTL were identified for those traits. Between 3 and 27 significant QTL (P < 0.01) were identified for each of a total of 15 traits evaluated. For example, highly significant QTL (P < 0.0001) were found for tomato flavour, °Brix, citrate, glutamate, total sugars, and total sugar/glutamate ratio. Their definition will provide the tomato breeder and processor with analytical tools that should enable the improvement of not only agronomic and technological traits, but also of the organoleptic (flavour) and compositional (nutritional) quality of tomato raw materials.
