Abstract:
Rainfall run-off was reduced by 40 to 75% in fall-planted cover-cropped beds compared to the conventional, fallow-bed system.
The conventional practice of Sacramento Valley (California) tomato growers is to maintain vegetation-free beds with herbicides prior to spring planting.
Average annual rainfall is 18 inches per season with the peak during December through February.
Additionally, a single season of a winter-grown mix of common vetch and peas between successive tomato crops resulted in increased tomato yields of 5 to 7%.
