Author:   C.V. Noordegraaf
Keywords:   Ornamental plants, new ornamentals, selection of ornamentals, consumer test
Abstract:
Although the assortment of ornamental crops is already very large, there are still possibilities for new crops as the market is always asking for something new. In The Netherlands yearly 800 – 1000 new floriculture products are documented and introduced. Most of them are new varieties raised by breeding companies. Only a few are a really new crop. With about 250 000 flowering plant species all over the world only a very small part is used for the ornamental industry. The investment for developing and introducing new crops is high. Potential plants must be selected carefully, before much money has been spent on research. Some profiles have been developed in order to help people with making a well-substantiated selection within potential new pot, bedding and patio plants. To answer the questions within the profiles some knowledge of the plants must be available or gathered. Otherwise these profiles can also help to direct research to collect firstly the most important dates.
