EFFECT OF GROWING MEDIUM AND FERTILISATION ON GROWTH HABIT AND COLOUR OF LAVANDULA STOECHAS L.

Abstract:
Four month old seedlings of Lavandula stoechas L. were cultured for six months on a peat : perlite 1:1 or 2:1 (by volume) medium, with pH adjusted to 5.7-6.0 and were fertilised with water soluble fertiliser 20N-19P-19K (2 g/l) every week or every two weeks (four treatments resulting from all combinations of two media and two frequencies of fertilisation). Fertilisation every week, as well, as the medium of 1 peat : 1 perlite, promoted the elongation of the shoots. The combination of these two induced long but drooping shoots and so the final height of the plant was short, giving an appealing pot plant that could be used for hanging baskets as well. Fertilisation every week combined with the 2 peat : 1 perlite medium gave plants with long, erect shoots and more lateral shoots, typical of the species. Fertilisation every two weeks induced chlorosis to the plants (light green to yellow leaves) and when it was combined with the 2 peat : 1 perlite medium the elongation of the shoots was inhibited and the plants were light green, short and compact.
