Abstract:
Young plants of Lantana camara L. subsp. camara grown into pots in a glasshouse, were treated with the growth regulators paclobutrazol and triapenthenol, in order to control their heights and to produce flowering compact plants. Paclobutrazol and triapenthenol were applied once, as foliar sprays to runoff, at the concentrations of 0, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 175, 350, 700 and 1400 mgL-1 respectively. All the treatments were made twelve days after the pinching of the plants in the second internode from the tips, when the length of the new-developing stems was 1 cm approximately. The measurements which took place were related to plant development and flowering. Environmental data were recorded for the air temperature, air humidity and light intensity. Results showed that both paclobutrazol and triapenthenol reduced heights of the plants, depending on the concentration, while on the other hand flowering was increased continually with the increased concentrations of the regulators up to an upper limit (100 mgL-1 for paclobutrazol and 350 mgL-1 for triapenthenol) and after this, flowering was decreased. The treatment with 100 mgL-1 paclobutrazol provides plants with better commercial quality, for use as indoor flowering pot plants because, while causes reduction in the height increase approximately at the one-third, nearly increases four times the number of flowers compared with the control. All the treatments, except the control, showed dark green foliage color. It was also concluded, that one or more micrometeorological factors affected significantly plant height, depending on substance concentration.
