ISHS Acta Horticulturae 540: I International Conference on Banana and Plantain for Africa

RECENT ADVANCES IN POSTHARVEST TECHNOLOGIES OF BANANA AND PLANTAIN IN AFRICA

Author:   A.O. OLorunda
Abstract:
Plantain and banana provide up to 25% of the food energy in sub-Saharan Africa. They are also an important source of revenue for the backyard producers and the large scale farmers. One of the major problems limiting the expansion of banana and plantain production in the region include high post harvest losses caused by inadequate and inefficient postharvest handling practices. In this paper recent advances in the application of low as well as high technology approaches in the reduction of post harvest losses in the banana and plantain food commodity systems have been reviewed. In particular, the organizational structures, under which both approaches can be made relevant in the prevailing banana and plantain marketing systems in the region, have been looked into and their implications discussed.
