STUDIES ON THE LONGEVITY OF PRATYLENCHUS GOODEYI IN BANANA-BASED CROPPING SYSTEMS

Abstract:
Alternatives for reducing populations of the root lesion nematode, Pratylenchus goodeyi in heavily infested banana plantations were studied in experiments conducted at Oyugis in western Kenya. Four treatments, viz. clean fallow, weed fallow, a non-host sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas), and banana were investigated. Observations of soil extractions up to six months after transplanting indicated that the clean fallow was free of nematode infestation. However, soil collected and planted with banana in pots showed the presence of infestations of P. goodeyi. In the weed fallow up to 2000 P. goodeyi per 100 g soil were observed whereas in the non-host crop 150 nematodes per 100 g soil were present. A steady build-up of P. goodeyi was recorded in banana.
