ISHS Acta Horticulturae 540: I International Conference on Banana and Plantain for Africa

EFFECT OF ORGANIC MULCHES ON GROWTH, YIELD COMPONENTS AND YIELD OF EAST AFRICAN HIGHLAND BANANAS

Authors:   J.A. Bananuka, P.R. Rubaihayo, J.Y.K. Zake
Keywords:   Crop residues, live mulch, growth, yield.
Abstract:
The influence of four different organic mulches (live mulch, soybean residues, maize stover and swamp grass) on growth and yield of East African Highland bananas was investigated. Percentage soil moisture, vegetative growth, yield components and yield were all found to be significantly higher in mulched plots compared with live mulch and unmulched control plots. Live mulching with Mucuna legume had a negative effect on banana growth and yield.
