Abstract:
Vegetables from the Brassica group are highly appreciated and much consumed in Yugoslavia.
Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) is the traditional, economically most important member. Brassica breeding is performed using several different approaches.
One method is improvement of the National collection located in the Centre for Vegetable Crops in Smederevska Palanka.
The National Brassica collection was established with the aim of preserving autochthonous Brassica species of our country.
Creating new cultivars through a combination of conventional with new methods such as tissue culture and genetic engineering is another aspect of our breeding efforts, which we are currently intensively investigating.
Another aspect that we consider very important is a constant search for resistance to diseases and pests.
Increased tolerance is observed in some of our domestic populations of cabbage, which is the basis of our conventional breeding program.
Agrobacterium mediated transformation of different brassicas is also one of the techniques we are currently using.
Most of our intention is with cabbage aimed at optimizing Agrobacterium mediated transformation.
