Abstract:
Pronounced matroclinal inheritance, as expected from the peculiar Canina meiosis, has been demonstrated in interspecific crosses with morphological as well as RAPD markers.
In addition, there is also some evidence of occasional apomixis.
Dogrose species differ considerably in the amount and partitioning of intraspecific genetic variation.
This is most likely due to differences in reproductive system (relative proportions between apomixis, selfing, outcrossing and interspecific hybridization) and the resulting effects on genome constitution.
A discrepancy in interspecific genetic distances as estimated by morph-ological and RAPD markers suggests that the present taxonomy may have overemphasized some of the morphological characters.
