Abstract:
We have analysed 33 peach cultivars from the USA, Italy, China and Japan for 32 enzyme systems using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Good activity and separation were achieved for all systems, including ones previously reported as poorly resolved. On the basis of polymorphism revealed for twenty-one enzyme systems (ACP, AKP, AMY, ADH, CAD, DIA, EST, FRK, GAL, GLU, GOT, GDH, HEX, IDH, MDH, ME, MNR, PEP, PRX, PHO and SKD) 31 loci were proposed, of which 22 are new. Western cultivars, 10 American and 27 Italian, were polymorphic for 28 and 27 loci respectively, indicating much higher polymorphism than previously reported. Asian cultivars, represented by four Chinese and six Japanese, showed polymorphism for 16 and 23 loci respectively. Isoenzyme data were used to calculate genetic distances and similarities. A dendrogram constructed by UPGMA cluster analysis showed the distinctness of most Asian cultivars.
