Abstract:
Two bud mutants of ‘Saijo’ (M-1 and M-2) were obtained from the orchard of the Shimane Agricultural Experiment Station. The scions of these bud mutants were grafted on other trees of ‘Saijo’ and grown for ten years. The M-1 fruits were bigger, flatter and had a later maturation period than ‘Saijo’. M-2 fruits were also big, lengthwise and had a late maturation period. After removal of astringency in the two mutants and ‘Saijo’, little or no sucrose content was present in fruits of M-1 and ‘Saijo’, whereas, much higher levels of sucrose was presents in M-2 fruits. In this study, we characterize the two mutants, which are promising as new cultivars of Japanese persimmon.
