RESEARCH ON THE GENETICS OF INCOMPATIBILITY IN CORYLUS

Authors:   G. Me, L. Radicati, R. Vallania
Keywords:   hazelnut, pollen, S-alleles, sporophytic incompatibility
Abstract:
This research is part of a programme for hazelnut breeding by controlled crosses. We started this project in 1990, using mainly the renowned italian cultivar ‘Tonda gentile delle Langhe’ as female parent. As hazelnut has self-incompatibility of the sporophytic type, S-alleles were screened in 42 selections with superior vegetative and productive characteristics, in order to determine the incompatibility relationships among these selections and the main cultivars. This knowledge is useful for commercial cultivation and for breeding. S-alleles were classified on the basis of growth/no growth of pollen tubes in the styles after hand pollination with pollen whose S-alleles are known. Observations were performed 24 hours after pollination with a microscope with fluorescent light, using non-fixed material. We identified some S-allele combinations not yet reported. Among them cases of homozygosity (S2 S2) and of codominance (S1S7, S7S20) in pollen. Pollen with homozygous S-alleles is useful as a marker in incompatibility studies as it makes determination of the alleles easier. On the basis of these results, a table of compatibility relationships between several selections and ‘Tonda gentile delle Langhe’ was produced.
