BREEDING FOR HIGH FRUIT QUALITY IN APRICOT

Abstract:
The problem of high fruit quality in apricot has recently become very important. One of the main objectives of the apricot breeding programme in Bulgaria is to obtain new genotypes with the following quality traits: large fruit size, light or dark orange skin colour with intensive red blush, covering over 50% of skin surface; firm, tasty fruit flesh with rich aroma, good texture, and sweet kernel. Twenty four parents have been used as genitors for high fruit quality in our breeding programme. We obtained 794 seedlings from cross- and open pollination. The investigations on the main pomological characteristics, as well as on biological ones in all the 20 populations have been made for at least 3 years. We used The Apricot Descriptor of I.P.B.G.R. (1980) to discribe each seedling. Twenty six hybrids were selected for their attractive appearance and high eating quality. Nine of them, presented in this paper, also have large fruit.
