THE SIGNIFICANCE OF INTERSPECIFIC HYBRIDIZATION FOR BREEDING OF PRUNUS CERASIFERA

Authors:   V.M. Gorina, A.A. Richter
Keywords:   Prunus brigantiaca, Prunus cerasifera, hybrid, frost resistance, self-fertility
Abstract:
Some results of long-term selection work on obtaining the winter-hardy, self-fertile forms of cherry-plum through interspecific hybridization are presented. It was found out that the F1, F2 and F3 hybrides’ some characters have values intermediate between the parent forms’. Two forms are singled out as promising for cultivation in the regions situated farther to the north. As possible sources of self-fertility, frost-resistance and desirable biochemical properties, some hybrids are selected for farther selection work.
