Abstract:
Shelf life of pears is recorded by means of fruit firmness and incidence of internal breakdown in European pears (Pyrus communis) in the years 1995-1997. Maturity at harvest characterized by fruit firmness was highly variable, and influenced the shelf life to a high extent in such a way that ripe fruits had a short shelf life.
Fruit firmness was not directly related to the incidence of internal breakdown, and therefore it is suggested that records of internal breakdown following a specific procedure of ripening could be adopted as selection criteria for shelf life.
Data for some populations are presented, and Colorée de Juillet as mother proved to give offspring with short shelf life.
Other mother cultivars showed no consistent performance for different father cultivars.
However, combinations with Conference and Clara Frijs in general gave high fruit firmness and low tendency to internal breakdown.
