HERITABILITY OF FRUIT CHARACTERISTICS IN PEARS

Authors:   A.G. White, L.R. Brewer, P.A. Alspach
Keywords:   Pyrus, genetics
Abstract:
Heritabilities for twelve different fruit characteristics were estimated in a population of pear seedlings comprising 15 families of European and Asian variety parentage in the HortResearch pear breeding programme. In the 10 families with European cultivars for both parents, heritabilities were generally low. However, when the 5 Asian and Asian x European crosses were included crispness, firmness, skin grit and russet all had high heritabilities. Scab resistance and juiciness showed moderate heritabilities.
