Abstract:
From among the native rose species in Hungary the fruits of about 20 species are even currently gathered and processed in different ways.
In the fall of 1996 and 1997 we gathered the fruits of 11 species.
We studied the physical (diameter, length, weight) and internal (ascorbic acid, organic acid, sugar, mineral elements) characteristics of the fruits.
Our aim was to select those species from the rich Hungarian genetic resource that have big fruits, favourable internal values, so they can be of commercial production value or they can serve as parents for further breeding programs.
The most remarkable species proved to be the species R. elliptica Tausch and R. canina L. var. blondeana (Rip. ex Dés.) Crép due to their fruit size and high ascorbic acid and mineral content.
Mineral element and ascorbic acid content of the rosehips of R. deseglisei Boreau was also high but the fruit size and weight varied greatly in the two years.
Physical characteristics and mineral element content of the fruits of R. corymbifera Borkh. is remarkable, but it has only an average ascorbic acid content.
The fruits of R. zalana Wiesb. are relatively big, but beside the outstanding mineral, glucose and fructose content they contain ascorbic acid only in average quantity.
The fruits of R. rubiginosa L. are small, but contain a notable quantity of ascorbic acid and minerals.
This species is popular and well known also abroad.
The species R. canina L. is wide-spread in Hungary.
According to our studies, this species is valuable at farthest because of its fairly big fruits, as the ascorbic acid and mineral content of the fruits is quite low.
The physical and internal characteristics of the gathered rosehips can vary annually depending also on the growing place and even on the individual fruits.
We plan to go on with our studies drawing further rose species into our research.
