IRRIGERE: A GENERALIZED VERSION OF AN IRRIGATION SCHEDULING MODEL FOR A WIDE RANGE OF CROPS.

Abstract:
For most crops, precise irrigation scheduling is important. The Irrigere V 1.0 model (Battilani et al., 1999 a) was previously built with the aim of optimising the water supply to processing tomato crops and it has been successfully tested. This model includes various sub-models: estimation of potential evapotranspiration, changes in basal crop coefficient Kcb, water balance in the soil and near the soil surface and others. It operates according to the value of various factors: soil characteristics, initial soil water content, crop start date, daily climate, parameters of irrigation design. Because these sub-models and factors are involved in most cropped species, and main characteristics of most species, particularly the Kcb curve parameters, have already been given by Allen et al. (1996), version V 1.0 of Irrigere was developed in order to offer a wide range of options adapted to these various species, with proposed values by default regarding the soil, the irrigation system and the irrigation strategy. Supplementary new sub-models are added: Kcb is estimated from the temperature sum and the expected yield; root growth is also estimated from the temperature sum; two different soil layers may be entered and soil water content is estimated for eight soil sub-layers. This generalised version V 2 is presented here. Obviously, it has not been tested widely, but it should be a basis that can be adapted to most species and crop conditions, provided that adequate optional values can be entered.
