Abstract:
A two year study was carried out on artichoke cv. 044 growing in weighing lysimeters placed in a large field and watered with two irrigation methods (drip and sprinkler). The crop cycle was 310 and 313 days for 1996-97 and 1997-98, respectively.
Total maximum evapotranspiration (ETc) was 10% higher in drip method when compared with sprinkler method in the first year, because of LAI differences between the treatments.
In the second year no significant differences were recorded between the treatments.
Total ETc average was higher in 1996-97 (967 mm) than in 1997-98 (911 mm). Ten day crop coefficients (Kc) values increased from 0.5 at transplanting time (July) to 1.4 at the end of October and remaining almost constant (1.5) during winter until the final value of 1.7, which was reached in the two last months of the crop cycle.
Water use was 85% higher than in vegetatively propagated crop in the same area and with similar crop length, most likely this was due to higher biomass production in seed propagated crop.
Total heads yield did not show any difference between the two irrigation methods and the averages for two years were 12.1 and 14.7 t ha-1, in the first and second year, respectively.
The yield-WUE averaged 1.43 kg m-3.
