KEY CHALLENGES FACING THE CHERRY SUPPLY CHAIN IN THE UK

Authors:   U. Wermund, A. Fearne
Keywords:   Competition, cherries, market opportunity, supply chain
Abstract:
The fruit sector in the UK is struggling to maintain its competitive position. Substantial competition from imports and the variable climate are major constraints on British fruit production, particularly in the stone fruit industry. Multiple retailers believe that increased quantities of quality domestic produce can be sold easily if current production problems such as irregular cropping for cherries can be overcome. Qualitative research has been used to identify the key challenges facing the cherry supply chain in the UK. Initial results suggest that consumers are prepared to pay a price premium for home grown cherries, offering real opportunities for UK stone fruit growers.
