Through its economic and social dimensions and its economic functions, the horticultural sector represents an important national wealth for Romania.
This results from the large area under vine and fruit-trees plantations and vegetables (about 700 thousand ha); it is also the result of about 3 million people working in this sector which meets the demands of Romanian population's food needs, also providing products for export.
This paper investigates the state of horticulture and the causes of its decline in the transition period, also attempting to identify the ways for putting an end to this decline and for this sector revigoration and growth.
