| Abstract:
The aim of the research project “glasshouse of the future” is to initiate the development of a sustainable, safe and competitive Dutch glasshouse industry that complies with the Dutch integral environmental terms of reference (IMT-2010). The terms of reference and a profitable glasshouse industry are basic factors for this project. In 1998 a feasibility study was done to investigate the different topics that play a role in the ‘glasshouse of the future’. This study is a basis for the current research project that is aimed at realising the ‘glasshouse of the future’ at the Floriade 2002. The study ‘glasshouse of the future’ describes the glasshouse holding of the future based on current and expected developments. It presents how and with which techniques glasshouse products in 2010 will be produced. To be able to develop the ‘glasshouse of the future’, it is necessary to investigate all relevant topics. The investigated topics in the research project are glasshouse construction and cover, energy supply, dehumidification, crop production systems, labour and mechanisation, climate control, management and rural integration of glasshouse production. The research project ‘glasshouse of the future’ consists of many different parts. This means that many disciplines must be integrated to develop the ‘glasshouse of the future’. To realise this, the feasibility study started by composing a project group consisting of different research organisations to combine the various disciplines. The project group considers which parts of the project are implemented by which combination of organisations in co-operation with different parties from the glasshouse industry. These subprojects were worked out and integrated into the report of the study ‘glasshouse of the future’. This report is used as basis for further research, which will result in a demonstration of the ‘glasshouse of the future’ at the Floriade in 2002. | |
