TOKYO METROPOLITAN CENTRAL WHOLESALE MARKET [OTA MARKET] “FUJI” APPLE'S STANDARD AND PROBLEMS

Authors:   Y. Noma, S. Tsukagoshi, Y. Sunohara
Keywords:   Apple, Apple's standard, “Fuji” Apple, Japan general standard, Quality, Standard
Abstract:
Japan General Standard for apples and other fruit more than two decades ago. In the intervening years, pronounced changes in fruit production, distribution, and consumption created a gap between these General Standard and actual conditions, and they were revised in 1997.

This paper clarifies the Standard of “Fuji” apples, a variety that dominates the volume of apples handled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market [Ota Market], and problems surrounding these standards. The findings of the study on which it is based furnished part of the evidence for the revision of the General Standard for “Fuji” apples. The revision was prompted by the fact that Standard for apple at markets, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market, had grown extremely complex. One element complicating the Standard was intricate quality labeling. Although The General Standard defined three grades for quality and seven for size, the actual names pertaining to the quality of “Fuji” apples totaled 80. Such complexity impeded the smooth distribution of Fuji apples in the market. This paper defines the problems with these fruit standard for Fuji apples and introduces measures for improvement.
