ETHYLENE BIOSYNTHESIS AND ACC SYNTHASE GENE EXPRESSION IN CITRUS FRUIT

Authors:   E. Katz, D. Weiss, J. Riov, E. Goldschmidt
Keywords:   Citrus unshiu, non-climacteric fruit, wounding, fruitlet, fruit peel disc
Abstract:
We studied ethylene biosynthesis in citrus fruit at the physiological and molecular levels. Two clones coding for ACC synthase were isolated, and their expression investigated. Satsuma fruitlets, but not mature fruit, produced high levels of ethylene after harvest, beginning at 48 h and peaking after 120 h. Expression of the ACC synthase gene appears to be induced following harvest. Wounded fruitlet peel discs produced wound ethylene, peaking 6 h after excision. ACC synthase gene expression was detected in the peel disc system within 3 h.
